How to Choose the Right Knee Pads for MMA, Wrestling and Grappling

Whether you train MMA, wrestling, BJJ or grappling, protecting your knees is essential. Knee pads can improve comfort, reduce the risk of injury and help you train harder and more consistently.

However, not all knee pads are designed for the same purpose. Rehabilitation braces, wrestling knee pads and MMA-specific knee pads all serve a different role.

In this guide, we'll explain the differences and help you choose the right option for your training.

Why do fighters wear knee pads?

Combat sports place a significant amount of stress on the knees. Takedowns, sprawls, scrambles, shooting for a double leg, clinch work and striking all create repeated impact and friction.

Fighters commonly wear knee pads to:

  • Reduce friction burns.
  • Protect the knee joint from impact.
  • Improve comfort during training.
  • Prevent unnecessary irritation.
  • Increase confidence when wrestling and grappling.

Some fighters also wear knee pads when recovering from minor injuries, although dedicated rehabilitation braces are usually more suitable in those situations.

1. Rehabilitation knee braces

Rehabilitation braces are designed to stabilise and support the knee after an injury.

They are commonly used for:

  • Meniscus injuries.
  • ACL and MCL injuries.
  • Joint instability.
  • Recovery after surgery.

Rehabilitation braces are often easy to recognise because they usually feature straps that wrap around the knee to provide additional support and help keep the joint in place.

Although these braces provide excellent stability, they are often heavier, bulkier and more restrictive than knee pads designed specifically for combat sports.

2. Wrestling knee pads

Wrestling knee pads are specifically designed to protect the knees during takedowns, scrambles and constant contact with the mat.

Their main characteristics include:

  • Thick padding.
  • Lightweight construction.
  • Increased mobility.
  • Extra protection against friction.

These knee pads are ideal for athletes who spend most of their time wrestling.

Wrestling knee pads are also easy to recognise because they typically feature one thicker, rounded pad positioned directly over the kneecap. This design provides additional protection during takedowns, sprawling, scrambles and prolonged contact with the mat.

Best for:

✔ Wrestling

✔ Grappling

Less suitable for:

✘ Striking

3. MMA knee pads

MMA requires a combination of striking, wrestling and grappling. Because of this, MMA knee pads must be more versatile than traditional wrestling knee pads.

A good pair of MMA knee pads should provide:

  • Protection while shooting for takedowns.
  • Comfort during grappling exchanges.
  • Stability during transitions and scrambles.
  • Freedom of movement while striking.
  • Protection when throwing knees in training.

Unlike rehabilitation braces, MMA knee pads are designed to support performance rather than recovery.

Unlike traditional wrestling knee pads, MMA knee pads are designed to provide all-round protection. They typically cover a larger area around the knee, allowing athletes to move comfortably between striking, wrestling and grappling exchanges.

Example of an MMA knee pad. Compared with traditional wrestling knee pads, MMA knee pads usually protect a larger area around the knee and are designed for both grappling and striking.

Why do some fighters wear knee pads while throwing knees?

This is one of the biggest differences between wrestling knee pads and MMA knee pads.

MMA fighters don't just use their knees defensively. They also use them offensively.

During sparring sessions and technical training, knee pads help absorb some of the impact and reduce the risk of accidentally injuring a training partner.

This allows fighters to train more consistently while maintaining a high intensity level.
